A dermal filler is used either to remove wrinkles (but in a very different way to Botox) or to augment certain features. It is essentially an ‘implant’, in the form of a gel which is injected under the skin to fill a wrinkle. Equally it can be injected into the lips to make them appear fuller or just to define their shape. The fillers we use are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body and therefore these fillers have been found to be particularly safe.

Dermal fillers come in different thicknesses and can be used for fine lines around the mouth (e.g. smokers lines) or for deep naso-labial folds (the fold from the corner of the nose to the lips).

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes depending upon various factors such as the area being treated. Local anaesthetic cream is applied, although work on the lips requires a local anaesthetic injection for maximum comfort.

The effects are immediate and can last from 4 to 8 months depending again on the area being treated. The amount of product required will depend on the area being treated and the depth of the crease

The picture left shows smokers lines half way through treatment using Hydrafill grade II to its greatest effect and demonstrating the dramatic difference between left and right. Note also the greater definition in the lip border on the (clients) left side, giving a more youthful appearance and eliminating lipstick bleed.

These lips (left) were treated using Belotero for a soft natural look.

The top lip was treated to:

· Define the border

· Provide volume and symmetry with the bottom lip.

· To equalise symmetry between left and right

A frequent concern of clients when treating lips is an unnatural ‘fish lips’ look. These pictures show how natural lip augmentation can be.

The before and after pictures above demonstrate the effect of  Fillers (Hydrafill grade 3 in this instance) both on marionette lines (the downward lines from the corner of the mouth) and in treating jowels.

Many people are surprised at what can be achieved with dermal fillers.
